Writing progress still accumulates in Free. Pro tools must also be enabled in Plugins. AI services and model requirements are separate from your Novelist subscription.
Yes. Download the app from this website and use its Free tools without a time limit or a paid license. Free includes the core writing and worldbuilding workspace, local backups and DOCX/Markdown exports.
The official purchase is an annual Gumroad subscription, currently from €39.99 per year. In the app, Pro is unlocked with a license code that has an expiry date. Gumroad handles the purchase and renewal terms.
The app returns to Free. Your books and story material stay in your workspace. You can continue reading, editing, backing up and exporting with Free tools. Pro-only functionality becomes unavailable; renewing and activating a valid license restores access to those tools.
You do not need a Novelist cloud account to use the desktop app. To activate Pro, enter your license code in Settings → General. Gumroad handles purchase details separately. The current purchase notice says the license is emailed within 24 hours; check your spam folder too.
Core writing works offline. Pro supports offline use between license checks, subject to the license expiry date. After 90 days since a successful online verification, connect and check the license again. Downloads, updates and cloud AI need internet; local AI depends on your configured endpoint.
Yes, within the license’s device activation limit. Use your license code on each computer and check the activation result. If you reach the limit while replacing a computer, contact support for help with your activations.
Books and normal workspace data are stored locally. If you choose a cloud AI provider, requests send your prompt and selected context to that provider. A genuinely local Ollama or LM Studio endpoint can process requests on your computer; a remote endpoint sends data over the network. License and update checks are separate network requests, and usage analytics are optional and off by default.
No. You can write, organize, preview and export without AI. Pro’s generative AI tools are optional, including when you use local models. External provider charges are separate. Grammar & Clarity uses rule-based checks and does not require a generative AI provider.
Use the official download section for Windows, macOS Apple Silicon, macOS Intel Beta or Linux x86_64 AppImage. Free and Pro use the same app; activate a Pro license only if you want its additional tools.
